FAQs
-
Expert-led searches: Local naturalists and experienced field guides will lead searches, share identification tips, and discuss behavior, ecology, and conservation issues affecting the Western Ghats herpetofauna.
Targeted habitats: Guided walks will cover shola-grassland mosaics, tea-plantation edges, roadside streams, marshes, and moist forest floors—key microhabitats where many species are most active.
Night surveys: Several evening and nocturnal sessions using low-impact techniques to locate calling frogs, nocturnal geckos, and other night-active species.
Photography opportunities: Ample time for macro and close-up photography. Guides will assist with positioning subjects and suggest camera settings to capture textures, colors, and behavior while minimizing disturbance.
Species focus: Look for endemic and regionally important species typical of the Western Ghats—tree frogs, burrowing caecilians, skinks, agamid lizards, monitor lizards, and a variety of harmless and venomous snakes (guides prioritize safety and ethical viewing).
Small group size: Limited participants to ensure low disturbance and personalized guidance for both beginners and experienced herpers/photographers.
-
Pace: Moderate; walks vary from short roadside searches to longer forest treks over uneven terrain. Expect wet, muddy conditions in some microhabitats.
Gear: Participants should bring a headlamp with a red filter or dimming option, waterproof footwear, quick-dry clothing, rain jacket, insect repellent, water bottle, field notebook, and relevant camera equipment (macro lens, spare batteries, tripod or monopod).
Safety: All activities emphasize safety—maintain safe distances from wildlife, follow guide instructions around venomous species, and practice leave-no-trace principles. Basic first-aid provisions and emergency protocols will be in place.
Accommodation & meals: Comfortable local lodging selected for proximity to field sites; meals will include local cuisine with attention to dietary preferences if informed in advance.
-
Responsible herping: The tour follows ethical field practices—no collection, handling only when necessary and by trained guides, and prioritizing animal welfare and habitat protection.
Community and research: Learn about regional conservation projects and how documentation (photographs, calls, sightings) supports local research and citizen-science initiatives.
